How Do We Know That God Exists?

The cosmos or universe

The question of God’s existence is one that transcends generations, cultures, and belief systems. For centuries, humanity has grappled with the mystery of a higher power, searching for answers to life’s deepest questions. Is there more to existence than what we see and touch? Can something—or someone—beyond our understanding truly be responsible for the intricate beauty and order of the universe?

In today’s world, dominated by science and technology, it’s easy to dismiss these questions as abstract or unprovable. Yet, for billions of people across the globe, the belief in God isn’t just a concept—it’s a reality grounded in experience, faith, and understanding. Whether through ancient philosophical arguments, the marvels of creation, or the deeply personal moments that transform lives, evidence of God’s existence continues to resonate with those who seek Him.

This blog explores the ways we can know that God exists, beginning with the intellectual and scientific perspectives that have framed this debate for centuries. However, as we will see, the most compelling proof often lies not in theory, but in the power of personal encounters with the divine.

Philosophical and Scientific Perspectives on God’s Existence

Throughout history, humanity has sought to understand the divine through reason, observation, and intellectual inquiry. From ancient philosophers to modern scientists, the existence of God has been a topic of rigorous debate and profound reflection. While these perspectives don’t offer definitive proof in the way a scientific experiment might, they provide a foundation for belief that appeals to both logic and curiosity.

One of the most enduring arguments comes from Thomas Aquinas, who proposed the Five Ways—a set of logical demonstrations for God’s existence. Among them is the cosmological argument, which asserts that everything in the universe must have a cause. Since an infinite regress of causes is illogical, there must be a first, uncaused cause—God.

Similarly, the teleological argument, or the argument from design, suggests that the intricate complexity and order of the universe point to an intelligent designer. Think of the fine-tuning of natural laws or the beauty of ecosystems working in harmony. These elements inspire awe and seem to reflect the intentionality of a Creator.

Science, too, plays a role in exploring this question. While it explains the mechanisms of the universe—the "how"—it often falls short of addressing the "why." For instance, the Big Bang Theory describes the origin of the universe, but what caused the Big Bang? Many believe that the existence of such a precise and vast cosmos suggests a deliberate act of creation.

Yet, for all their brilliance, these arguments only take us so far. They create a framework for belief, but they cannot replace the deeply personal experiences that reveal God’s reality in a way no argument ever could.

Personal Encounters: The Heart of Knowing God

While intellectual and scientific arguments provide valuable perspectives on God’s existence, the most profound proof often lies in personal encounters with the divine. These moments move beyond the realm of theory, touching the core of human experience in ways that transform lives forever. Throughout history—and Scripture—personal encounters with God have provided undeniable evidence of His reality and presence.

Consider Moses, whose encounter with God on Mount Sinai forever changed the trajectory of his life. When he saw the burning bush, he did not just hear about God—he experienced Him. In this extraordinary moment, God revealed His name, His purpose, and His calling for Moses to deliver the Israelites from Egypt. The encounter was not a philosophical exercise; it was a personal, life-altering interaction that left Moses with an unshakable conviction of God’s existence and sovereignty.

Another powerful example is Paul’s transformation on the road to Damascus. Once a fierce persecutor of Christians, Paul encountered Jesus in a blinding light that halted him in his tracks. The voice of Christ not only exposed the error of his ways but also redirected his life toward a mission of spreading the gospel. This single moment of divine intervention turned an enemy of the faith into one of its greatest advocates.

The story of Jacob wrestling with God is another striking illustration. Alone in the night, Jacob wrestled with a divine figure until daybreak. This physical and spiritual struggle marked a turning point in Jacob’s life, leaving him with both a blessing and a new identity as Israel. His encounter with God was not just a fleeting moment—it was a transformational experience that redefined his relationship with the divine.

Similarly, the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in the temple revealed the Lord in all His holiness and glory. Overwhelmed by the majesty of God and his own unworthiness, Isaiah responded with humility and a willingness to serve. This encounter was not merely an abstract vision but a powerful reality that reshaped Isaiah’s understanding of himself and his mission.

These personal encounters highlight a truth that resonates deeply: God reveals Himself not just through arguments or creation, but in moments of intimacy and revelation. These experiences are often accompanied by awe, conviction, and transformation, leaving individuals with an unshakable belief in His existence.

As Christians, we can draw encouragement from these stories. They remind us that God desires to be known personally. Through prayer, worship, and an openness to His presence, we too can encounter God in ways that deepen our faith and affirm His reality in our lives.

Faith Beyond Theory: Living Proof of God’s Presence

While intellectual arguments and personal encounters provide compelling reasons to believe in God, the ultimate evidence of His existence is found in the transformation of lives. The experience of personal salvation and the spiritual change that follows stand as living proof of God’s reality and active presence in the world.

Salvation is perhaps the most powerful testimony of God’s reality. For many, coming to faith is a deeply personal experience—one that transcends abstract beliefs and becomes a lived reality. The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” This radical transformation—where guilt, shame, and fear are replaced by peace, joy, and purpose—demonstrates the profound impact of encountering God.

It’s not just a change in behavior or appearance; it’s an internal shift that affirms God’s presence in our lives. Those who experience salvation can attest to a deep, unwavering conviction that God is real. His love, grace, and power become undeniable forces that shape how they live, relate to others, and understand their purpose in life.

Consider the testimonies of countless believers who were once lost, bound by addiction, broken relationships, or despair. Through their encounters with God, they were set free, healed, and transformed. Their stories are not just theories or abstract arguments—they are living proof of God’s reality. These individuals carry a testimony of how God’s intervention in their lives changed everything.

For example, the Apostle John writes in 1 John 1:3, “We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us.” John’s testimony was rooted in a tangible, lived experience with Jesus, and he encouraged others to engage in the same encounter. His faith wasn’t built on philosophical musings but on the firsthand experience of God’s transformative power.

Our own personal salvation serves as a living proof of God’s existence. The process of being reborn in Christ is not a mere theory—it is a divine reality that is evident in the changes we experience in our lives. As Christians, we can testify that God’s presence is not just something we think about or read about. It is something we encounter daily, through the Holy Spirit, and through His guiding hand in our lives.

These changes can manifest in many ways—peace in the midst of trials, love for others that goes beyond human capability, strength when we feel weak, and a joy that defies circumstances. When we experience these things, we are living proof that God is real and active in our lives.

In conclusion, while philosophical and scientific discussions offer important insights, it is the living testimony of salvation and spiritual transformation that truly affirms the presence of God in our world. Our lives, as changed believers, speak volumes about the reality of God. As you reflect on your own faith journey, what has God transformed in your life? How has your personal encounter with Him deepened your conviction of His existence?
